Sulawesi Tour Itinerary

You can fly to Makassar, also known as Ujung Pandang or Manado, from Jakarta and Bali as well as directly from Singapore and Kuala Lumpur.

From the busy port of Makassar you head north towards Sulawesi’s center and visit Tana Toraja with some of the most unusual and eccentric groups of people in Southeast Asia. Spend time in the villages around Rante Pao and learn about their unique and interesting funeral rituals or undertake some wonderful walks in the beautiful countryside before returning back to Makassar.

Crossing over the equator you travel to the far north of Sulawesi and to the city of Manado. From here journey to the Tangkoko Nature Reserve to meet the smallest primates in the world together with hornbills, couscous and flying lizards. Your Sulawesi tour ends amongst the tropical Islands of Bunaken with their volcanoes, underwater wonders and relaxed turquoise bays.

Makassar

Arrival

Upon arrival at Makassar Airport you will be met by a ‘See Asia Differently’ representative and transferred to your hotel. In the afternoon you can choose to relax, or take a short city tour for a brief introduction to this interesting ex-Dutch colonial city.

Rante Pao

Makassar to Rante Pao

After an early breakfast you travel through rolling hills and scenic countryside up to Rante Pao. You will depart to Tana Toraja, passing through the Buginese villages with their typical houses on poles. On the way, you will visit the fishermen village in Barru district. If you are lucky, you also could see the traditional Buginese “Pa’bagan“ fishing boats. Lunch will be served at a seafood restaurant in Pare-Pare. In the afternoon, a stop also will be made at Puncak Lakawan for having a coffee break while enjoying the spectacular view of Mt. Kabobong.

Rante Pao

Traditional Villages Tour

This morning you will venture south to the villages of Lemo and Suaya, two traditional villages surrounded by wonderful limestone cliffs. You will see the incredible graves and the eerie Tau Tau (effigies) of deceased nobility hanging from the cliff face. You then continue to Londa village, where wooden coffins are suspended by ropes and poles that extend from the cliffs. Finishing the day at Ketekesu village, which has some of the finest examples of Tongkonan (Toraja Traditional Houses).

Rante Pao

Villages Tour Cont.

Venturing north to visit the village of Rantepao you reach Batutumonga, where you take an easy trek through some of Toraja’s traditional villages, which are perched on the slopes of Mount Sesean. You will continue through the villages of Bori and Palawa to meet the locals, and Marante village famous for its big Tongkonan houses and rice barns.

Manado

Rante Pao to Makassar & Manado

After breakfast you will drive back to Makassar stopping en-route for lunch at Pare-Pare. You will then be transferred to Makassar airport for your onward flight to Manado. On arrival at Manado, you will be met at the airport and transferred to your hotel, where you can enjoy the rest of the day as you wish.

Tangkok Reserve

Manado to Tangkok Reserve

After a free morning in Manado city you will transfer to the Tangkoko National Park and enjoy a 2-hour scenic drive before checking in to your homestay for the night. Later with the help of a local ranger, you will go in search for Macaca Nigra, Tarsius Spectrum, Uliurops Ursinus, Rhyticheros cassidix, many kinds of birds, trees and plants, such as Pitcher plant, Ficus, Palaqium, etc….

Bunaken Island

Tangkoko Reserve to Bunaken Island

Rising at dawn you will take a hike into the forest, where you will have the chance to view more birds and certainly the Black Crested Macaques, as these monkeys are early risers and go searching for food along the coastline. Later, you will continue to Manado’s harbor, where you will take a short boat ride to Bunaken Island, which will be your base for the next 4 days.

Free Days

You have 2 days where you are left to your own devices and can enjoy the extraordinary marine life of the reefs and beaches that surround the stunning Bunaken Island. The waters of Bunaken National Marine Park are extremely deep (1566m) with visibility up to 35-40m and temperature of 27-29 degrees. These waters display one of the highest levels of biodiversity in the world and are perfect for diving and snorkeling. Alternatively, you can just relax and laze around on the islands stunning beaches.
