Luang Prabang is one of our favourite places in Southeast Asia, here are our favourite 5 things to do whilst in Luang Prabang, Laos.
1. Tak Bat – Alms giving ceremony
Rise early and enjoy this lovely morning ritual. It has become really popular with travellers so be prepared for a bit of a crowd of spectators but it’s worthwhile getting up and being about at this magical hour. This is a daily routine for the monks, rising early to receive food from local people in their village. If you are feeling inquisitive, take a wander down some of the smaller alleyways and you’ll find yourself amongst more locals and less travellers and camera flashes.
2. Across the water
Luang Prabang is located at the junction of the Nam Kahn River and the Mekong. There are two bamboo bridges crossing the Nam Kahn River, where you can walk or cycle over to get out of the main city hub. Take a leisurely meander around the less travelled areas of Luang Prabang. On the Mekong there is a local ferry that can take you to the other side of the river. It’s not as busy and the scenery is absolutely beautiful.
3. Sunset beers on the waterfront
Take a stroll along Khem Khong and enjoy the waterfront precinct. Pick out a place to stay for drinks and enjoy the sunset hour. It’s a great spot to people-watch and enjoy the river scene and laid-back atmosphere.
4. Night market and street food
The night market takes over the main street from 5pm each night. Take a stroll through the stalls and you’ll see some really lovely handicrafts; prints on rice paper, t-shirts galore and many other interesting local products. Find your way into the alleyways and enjoy some local street food. Lao food has lots of fresh flavours and features many well-known regional dishes such as papaya salad. Fish is abundant and fresh in Luang Prabang and eaten in soups, salads and simply steamed!
5. Kuang Si Waterfall
Take a short journey away from town to the Kuang Si Waterfall. Take a walk around the falls and bring something to wear into the water, as most of the pools are open for swimming. The falls are 3 tiers and spectacular to see, the water is bright blue and refreshing to cool off in on a hot day.
